How to be Spanish

Linen Shirt – Marks & Spencer

Swimwear – Primark

Sunglasses – Linda Farrow

So how can one be chic and Spanish-like, something we’ve all asked ourselves right? (No? Just me?). Well it’s easy, I’ve googled it. I may even have a degree on it. The official rules involve throwing on a flowing white linen shirt, making sure your hair is long enough to also be flowy, dusting off your 18ct gold aviator sunglasses and some extremely cheap swim shorts (and I mean CHEAP, £2 cheap) find a luxurious windy beach and ‘Bob es tu tio’! (‘Bob’s your uncle’, I’m not even sorry).

After days of research, the answer isn’t as apparent as you’d expect. Even in the midst of full ‘Spanish-ness’ – eating a fresh seafood paella, drinking sangria (albeit non-alcoholic), sitting at a cliff-top restaurant, wearing sliders and swim shorts and saying my por favor’s and gracias’, I’m still in pursuit. Something I’ve always found fascinating (and viciously avoided) is that you can easily pick out a Londoner from a throng. The first break of sun and they strip off as many items as deemed appropriate (and sometimes not so appropriate), burn, in said sun, and have a borderline obsession with pubs. I know I’m stereotyping, but I say ‘they’ because I actually couldn’t be further from that stereotype, please believe me. But it is so easy for other nationalities?

Twinset – Prévu

Bag – Céline

Watch – Rolex

So, then it hit me. It isn’t about having a specific ratio of shorts, shirts and flip flops in your wardrobe, it’s about caring less! Spanish fashionistas in their Gucci cropped pants, Birkin bags and Manolo Blahnik heels give no f*cks! They’re care free and stylish with absolutely no effort! Whereas I’m too busy being getting wind burn, trawling along the beach with wet and sandy sliders hoping to get just one useable picture and obsessively planning outfits to obtain that effortless style that these Mediterranean people have! (Parisians also included). So that’s the moral of this post – relax more, be less high maintenance, eat good food and travel often. The stylish bit comes easy, I promise!

My linen shirt is from Marks & Spencer, its from their Autograph range in a size 18 for that desired flow-y look (like I said, it’s part of the rules). It’s inexpensive and a real wardrobe staple so grab yours while you can! The swim shorts are from Primark, I would never spend more than £5 on swimwear as it gets suncream stains, salty patches and smells of chlorine, so I highly recommend these ones. The twinset is from one of the best upcoming British designers I know, Prévu. They’re based in North London and all of their items are made in Britain with sustainably sourced material, the top is oversized and longline exaggerating the lines with the tailored skinny shorts (all made in a stretchy fabrics so are super comfortable). The bag is Céline trio bag, with two of the pockets taken off and turned into a clutch with my all time favourite shades from Linda Farrow.

Let me know you’re thoughts on the outfits and you can thank me later for the instructive piece on being chic and Spanish-like by leaving a comment below! As always, you can shop the items from my outfit by clicking on the thumbnails. Make sure you check out the linen shirt from M&S and the Linda Farrow shades for some wardrobe staple summer must-haves.
