Someone once told me, ‘simplicity is the key to sophistication’. Eyes wide, fists clenching and psychopathically smiling from ear to ear, I let out a (semi-controlled) “eeeeee“. I snatched my iPhone from my bag faster than you could say ‘bob’s your uncle’ and furiously punched this mantra into my notes (in bold, and underlined, for impact). I will freely admit, I am a self-obsessed sophistication searcher (yes, it’s a ‘thing‘) and will take any and every piece of advice, tips or instruction I can get on mastering the art of simplicity.
In the words of Audrey H, “why change? Everyone has their own style, when you’ve found it, stick to it“. Theres something compelling about putting together wardrobe basics and finding a fortifying new way of wearing them, but then again, why not? Thelma and Louise were always BFF’s. Anyway, the point I’m making is that, less, really is more. My daily routine used to consists of waking up, showering, then frantically sprinting from room-to-room yelling ‘I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR’ while tearing through Vogue hunting for inspiration. I can (calmly) say that this type of drill has been avoided since truly realising the power of basics.
Even though I quite often find frustration in outfit picking, I am a minimalist person, usually the end result being something black and carefree. I sometimes stray into trend-driven-obsessively-buying-anything-featured-in-condé-nast-publications mode, but I’m managing to keep that at bay with the knowledge that with good basics, you’ll have endless options. Versatility, apparently, is also a superpower, and who doesn’t want to be a superhero!? Truth is, I have a passion for fashion and chronic laziness (which go together like Mariah and J-LO) so you can imagine my fixation with finding versatile, multi-purpose pieces that can help me flow smoothly from photoshoot, to lunch, to meetings, all while staying simply sophisticated.
Moral of the story is, keep it simple with good wardrobe basics and you will be up there next to the Parisians in ‘stylish’ tiers. Once I managed to trawl through the ‘trendy’ jackets, kick flare jeans and gazillion different ‘fashionable’ sweaters in my wardrobe, I found my Narnia filled with classic cigarette pants, simple knitted t-shirts and monochromatic shirts.
