The Art of Contemplation

Reclined, with a Star & Tonic in my hand and a volcanic ash facial treatment seeping in under a hot towel, I began to consider the art of contemplation (between nodding-off for a minute or two). I speak for most men when I say we don’t take the time out to contemplate much of anything, really, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear of Star of Bombay. The newly launched premium gin, with a distinctly smooth character, announced ‘The Art of Contemplation’ collaboration with Murdock London, the grooming specialists for gentlemen, raising awareness to the benefits of contemplating.

From 1st August – 16th September, visitors to the Murdock London stores in Soho, Covent Garden and Shoreditch were able to enjoy a moment of contemplation with complimentary Star & Tonics during their grooming experience, me included. The ultimate destination for the modern man, Murdock London defines gentlemen’s grooming. Their unique offering of quintessential treatments and barbershop experiences form a self-assurance that men need to survive in the escapades of life. Moulded around the modern-man but inspired by St. James’ barbershop heritage, Murdock London is your one stop shop. As I was welcomed with an ice old Star & Tonic and a handshake from my barber, Sheldon, I felt the denied languor creep up on me. We started off with an aloe vera and peppermint cleanser to clean and prep the skin for the pumice & herbal extract face scrub to lift impurities and clear pores. Following this, an almond oil was applied along with a volcanic ash treatment, both of which were left to work under a hot towel. While left to work, Sheldon started on the manicure, using a Shea & Cocoa Butter hand treatment leaving my hands so soft that I lovingly touched my face the whole tube ride home (with unwelcome, but understandable, stares from commuters). After I (just) managed to peel myself out of the chair and drag my knuckles home, I continued pondering the thought and realised contemplation is often underrated, but an essential part of health, I think.

Men frequently over-look the importance of self-maintenance, especially in our modern day hectic lives, so it was a welcome recess from daily tribulations to stop and indulge, which we scarcely have time for. The concept clearly displays it’s inspiration, from the slow vapour infusion distillation process used to create the Star of Bombay. The Art of Contemplation with Murdock London allowed each client to combine relaxation with the Bombay Sapphire style. The gently dried Bergamot Orange peel, sourced from the mountains of Calabria, Southern Italy, provides a fragrant, rich citrus note; while the floral-musk of the Ambrette Seeds, from the tropical yellow hibiscus flower grown in Ecuador, supplies a singular graceful elegance. This combination has resulted in a gin with a distinctive character that almost insists relaxation for enjoyment. Ultimately, the art of contemplation is an crucial form of self-reflection everyone needs to stimulate self-improvement and mental growth. It may sound trivial, but relaxation and a distinctly smooth premium gin aren’t a bad place to start…
